Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli join together to celebrate the century-old history of delicious daxi dried tofu
2019 Daxi Dried Tofu Festival kicks off at Daxi Zhongzheng Park. To promote Daxi’s century-old culture of bean curd products, the festival this year features a special collaboration among century-old industries in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli. The opening event, “A Century-Old Harmonious Union”, debuts a giant hot pot consisting of signature dishes of the four counties and cities. Highlighting delicacies passed down over a hundred years, the festival invites tourists to delve into a special experience based on diversified collaborations among century-old industries.

Marking the fifth Daxi Dried Tofu Festival, the celebration this year features century-old industries from not only Taoyuan but Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City and Miaoli County. To start with, the four collaborate in serving a giant hot pot featuring four signature delicacies of the areas respectively: Daxi dried tofu of Taoyuan City, Gongwan of Hsinchu City, Hakka Bantiao of Hsinchu County and Miaoli County’s top-rated local delicacy, Shui Jing Jiao. In addition, about 30 food businesses from the four areas are invited to promote their specialty products at the festival as well.

Even more impressive than the opening event is the themed activities. “Century-Old Delicacy” invites visitors to taste soymilk nougats made with Daxi dried tofu, soymilk and trehalose. “Century-Old Show” is a live demonstration displaying the making of a gigant-sized tofu which will later be distributed to participants for a taste. “Century-Old Art” is an interactive tea ceremony hosted in the shaded area of Zhongzheng Park scheduled on the last day of the festival. Participants can enjoy some soy leicha and learn about the Hakka tea culture and etiquette from the lecturer.
There’s more that the festival has to offer. There are stage performances, interactive tofu cuisine DIY, wood crafting workshop, challenge games, dried tofu culture exhibition, stamp collecting activity to redeem a gift and coupons to local stores.
